Steampunk: Elegance and Paradox
Steampunk is one of the most vibrant subgenres of retro-futuristic science fiction. Originally emerging as a literary subgenre, steampunk quickly transcended its boundaries, becoming a distinct subculture. Nowadays, the term is predominantly associated with design.
Origins of Steampunk Imagine that at a certain point in history, humanity took a small turn in an unfamiliar direction, resulting in a completely different modern world. Electricity never replaced steam power. Plastics do not exist. People continue to dress in whimsical attire—everywhere you look, there are waistcoats with pocket watch chains dangling. This is the world envisioned by steampunk enthusiasts.
This style emerged in the 1970s as a subgenre of science fiction literature. Steampunk novelists described an alternative reality where Victorian-era fashion and technology still dominate the contemporary world. For instance, a character in such a book might dress in clothing from the late 19th century but live in the present (or even the future) and use automobiles and computers. However, these devices would be powered by gears, cogs, and steam.
Sources of Inspiration and Steampunk Philosophy Authors of steampunk novels drew inspiration from Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Iconic works like Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus” also played a significant role in shaping the entire steampunk movement. Equally influential were the “penny dreadfuls” of the 19th century, primarily romantic and adventure stories.
The philosophy of steampunk combines the optimism of the Victorian era with contemporary creativity and self-assuredness. Across the globe, dozens of artists modify or create objects in the steampunk aesthetic. Some serve practical purposes, while others are purely artistic or form part of costumes.

К примеру, персонаж подобной книги может одеваться в наряды второй половины XIX века, но при этом жить в нынешнее время (или даже в будущем) и пользоваться автомобилями и компьютерами. Правда, приводиться в движение они будут шестеренками, зубцами и паром.
